Default Fordyce

It has been about five years since I boated Fordyce. I used to live in Reno and would paddle this gem whenever weather and water permitted. I've run Fordyce about ten times, and even though I live in Durango, Colorado, I would make the journey to be with my old friend once again. I've boated it pretty low, in the 300 cfs range. One time I remember paddling off the "lake" amidst massive silt deposits and newly exposed rapids. The optimum flow, for me, is 450 to 600 cfs. This summer I plan on taking a trip to Cali to run some of the Sierra's most spectacular drops. I hope the rapids on Fordyce are among these.

Default Fordyce Creek

“Imagine the South Yuba along I-80 without the freeway, without bridges, powerlines, or any human habitation. This is Fordyce Creek.” --Lars Holbek

Dear Sirs,
Fordyce Creek is the best whitewater experience I have ever had! I have only been kayaking there once back in the late eighties as it has been quite difficult to accurately predict a safe and enjoyable flow. The picture I keep at my desk of the magnificent twenty five foot water fall "Fordyce Falls" often brings back memories of joy. For an old timer like me these days are very hectic. To be able to plan and execute a family vacation in this day and age can prove to be trying. If everyone could have the opportunity to visit this gem when there is a scheduled release of appropriate water flow, the rewards my friend will be obvious. I hope to one day experience this Donner Summit area river with my fast growing son!

Fordyce has been on my todo list for some time. I live in Seattle, WA and travel to Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Oregon, California and British Columbia to boat. I boat >100 days per year, travel interstate at least once a month.

October-Feb are hit and miss up here as we wait for rain storms. Fall Cali creekin trips are becoming an annual event in our group, and I look forward to adding Fordyce to the list net year.
