Default poe info

I am just looking for any info on this run as I heard that the poe stretch of the N. feather is boatable now. Is there an internet gauge for that run? American Whitewater lists a 4-5 section, anybody care to comment on the quality of the whitewater on that stretch? thanks and happy holidays.

I've heard people doing the Big Bend run lately but confusing it as the Poe Run which is upstream. Those I've talked to said the Big Bend isn't really worth it with the exception of the runnable dam at the start of the run.

yeah, i saw some picks of that dam, looked like a fun brainless drop. but i guess that's pretty much the main feature of the run.

i am actually putting together a write up of the dam right now, we parked and hucked it. with playboats it would have been more worth while, the carry back up was a little tedious... but still, brainless fun indeed.

And yes, Poe is not runnable right now... the powerhouse at the put in for the Dam run is where most of the water is coming from. If you are interested, let me know, I may not finish the write up for a day or two, but can send info over...

sorry, don't mean to be a spoil sport. but be just a little bit carefull...it is very shallow and you pull some Gs at the bottom! many years ago my buddy landed kind of sideways.. on a brace, and his elbow got busted up really bad. we spent most of the night in the oroville hospital while he was getting worked on.

now go have fun

Default Big Bend Run: AKA Lower Poe

I have run the big bend run down "into" Lake Oroville several times and I always enjoy it. The most significant feature is not the dam but the long paddle out to Dark Canyon boat ramp. Depending on water level and how tough you are it take two to three hours. There are several fun class III/III+ rapids that are easy to scout or portage. This is followed by a couple of miles of moving class I/II. If you are looking for something new with plenty of water this time of year and you enjoy the exercise this is a fun trip.

Although I've never done the run, I've been told that the road down to the Dark Canyon boat ramp has been chained & locked shut for a while now. Supposedly a fear about 9-11 & terrorists blowing up the dam. So add another hour or so of paddling across the lake.

Alternatively, I've heard of some folks who have arranged for a speedboat shuttle across the lake at the end. 20-30 minutes of drinking beer in the boat instead of a 3-hour flatwater paddle...

i heard the gate was locked because once the rains started (a month ago), several locals who were at the ramp drinking lost control of their cars on the steep mud and slipped their cars into lake... I know people didnt have a problem with the gate being locked the weekend before thanksgiving. And over thanksgiving people said that the gate was locked during the week and maybe through the winter on the weekend too... I would say ask around, AW might know more about its status...
