Drago Rossi Gangster/Rainbow Idra. Orange with Drago Rossi stripes. Used maybe 4-5 times. Near new condition. The same perfect hull design as the DR Mafia but with a more conventional deck with more foot-room, no rear hatch and a more conventionally equipped interior. Super creeker for the lighter weight boater (120-160 lbs) and a fantastic play-creeker for the heavier ones. My Mafia has been my all time favorite kayak for several years now. Due to its overlap with the Mafia the Gangster has been discontinued from the DR lineup. $475

I am 5'8", tend to weigh between 165-175. I've read only a few reviews of the gangster, but am interested in it. You are the Drago Rossi rep aren't you?

My questions: For the feel I like, I am a bit too heavy for the diesel 65, the diesel 75 feels too large. I like the way I fit in the new burn M, and love the way that boat paddles, but I am not too crazy about its cockpit. Based on that, m I too heavy for the gangster?

I also like the diesel's size cockpit opening. The I-4 L I paddle has a cockpit opening smaller than I like. That was the main reason I never looked at the mafia. Is the gangster opening bigger? I like to be able to pull both knees up and out together.

I've read a few reviews about the gangster paddling more from the stern. What does that mean? I've had boats that my long legs force me to sit back with the boat out of trim. I don't really like a boat that gets the stern pushed around.

Is it possible to demo the boat? I like the burn, but I would hate to wind up with one if gangster is a whole lot better for my size and paddling style.

I'm no longer the DR rep. I gave that position up about a month ago.

The best size for you much depends on what kind of rivers are you planning to kayak. If you are 165-175 the Diesel 75 should be a good size for you in Class IV+ / Class V waters. I may feel too large in easier hydraulics.

The Gangster is great for me at 190 up to class IV, including big water with moderate gradients. When the gradient picks up and the boat submerges in the steep drops, that is when you benefit from more volume. For those runs I select the big Critical Mass because the Gangster would dive deeper and be effected more by the hydraulics.

So, what I think is that for your weight the Gangster would be a good all around boat but, I would still want something more volume for Class V steep stuff.

As far as I'm concerned I never considered the Gangster to "paddle from the stern". My preference in setting the trim is the actually make the boat just slightly bow heavy, by sitting more forward. That will always free up the stern and prevent the grabbiness.

The difference between the Gangster and the Burn is that the Gangster is drastically more manuverable, given its sidewall and hull design. You will not find as much primary stability, since it is not a flat hull design but, you will avoid all those problems that the Burn has due to its nearly vertical sidewalls and the water grabbing them and pushing them around.

I had a Fluid Flirt before and I like the Nemesis even more. It is stable, looser and more playful than the Flirt.
