Guidebook recommendations?

New to Ca. from Co. and looking for a guidebook...I've heard there are several that are OK and one that is great. I'm looking for the great one. (I need something to salivate over while I recover from injuries incurred by the crazy drivers on these highways...) Hoping for title, author, and names of shops that stock 'em, as I'm stuck in an area that seems to be devoid of water, paddle shops, and trucks with roof racks. Help!

The great one is Lars Holbeck and Chuck Stanley's Best Whitewater in California...

Excuse me my child as a chastise one of our own.

This argument was settled at the Great conference of '97. Ah! the Great conference. Many a keg was vanquished in the name of a higher state of mind. If I remember correctly we had to pull brother Blue from the river, naked, covered with pump grease, with a blow up sheep... but I digress.

Members of the church are to refer to The Good Book as either "The Best Whitewater in California", more commonly the Book, or the Guide. To do otherwise is to demean the infinite wisdom of the River handed down to us through the most holy prophets Holbek, and Stanley.
Would you refer to the Bible as "the great one is old dude, and old dude's Holy Bible, No you would not!(for various political and social issues we need not get into now.)

It was decided, in the name of continuity and so as not to confuse the Shuttle Bunny, by most holy and wise disciples. For two reasons one: can you think of a better guide book? I thought not!! Two: it has adequate shuttle directions for even the most challenged of shuttle bunny's. Need you further proof of it's holiness. I hope not! 'cause that's all I have.

You may cleanse your sins Brother/Sister stillinlotus. You must read the Guide's description on Cache Creek five times and portage Satan's Cesspool on a Saturday.

sorry heather and guys but that guide is nothing compared to CRCII and CA doesn't have anything comparable. Heather, where is CO are you from? You better not be a frontranger or my help stops right here!!

Don't worry -- CRC will always be The Bible, even if the Freyer is cluing me in to the Good Book. The Sistine Chapel of Whitewater may be in the Sierras, but the Fountain of Eternal Life springs directly from the Rockies, and Salida is 7200' closer to Heaven. However, with time, multiple baptisms on various runs, and enough good beta, I may slowly be converted (assuming I don't get taken out by a minivan first). I've heard rumors of smooth granite instead of sharp rocks, so I'm open to some preaching.

The poison oak, however, SUCKS.

Upon reading the preceding I found it necessary to retire to my meditative chamber. There I reflected upon the poster for Aerated that hangs in front of my toilet. Into my mind came the words of a mighty warrior of whitewater, Brother Scott Lindgren of the Holy order of Magellan, a man who has traveled the world doing battle with the most fearsome of enemies in the most remote corners of this earth. The night before I'd watched Viewfinder's show on whitewater kayaking. (My word the narrator was awful but that is another topic) On the show Brother Scott discussed the question he's most often asked. "Where is the best whitewater.". Brother Scott's response was a sermon of few words but much depth. Of all his travels the Sierra Nevada mountain range is where he chooses to make his home. I paused...completed my reflection and returned to the study and typed this sermon.


CO. IS THE FIFTH LEVEL OF HELL!!!!!! On that level of hell boaters face such evils as non-stop cheesegraters with a buckets of demon piss substituted for water. At the bottom of which are sharp undercut rocks where more horrors await. HARSH you say, EXAGGERATION you say. Well maybe. But I've seen the videos!!!!!!!!
Than I decided this was a little over the top.

This I will say, I have seen this book you call CRC. I shuddered at the images of debaucery contained within. Pictures of frigid and desolate contiuous class V+ canyons. Deep and dark they drained all warmth from my soul. I had to go run the south silver just to feel my fingertips again, such was my reaction to this book. Oh Heather Z my sister I am so glad you have found Us. So mislead by tempation and the darker arts. This "CRC" is no bible....this is PORNOGRAPHY!!!!! Sorry there I go again. My feelings run deep as you can tell. And when I meet newcomers strong is the urge to proselytize and convert. Such is the temptations for men of the gortex.

Perhaps I am not strong enough in mind and spirit, given to much to the heart. I must purge my flesh and meditate upon the question.

Personally I'm a fan of Cassidy and Calhoun, but I admit that "California Whitewater" is getting out of date.... It hasn't been updated in a while, but it gives a nice mile by mile map of the rivers it covers. It seems to over-rate rapids as compared to the "holy book" referred to by others. The "holy book" rates things as IV+ where "California Whitewater" rates them as V-. Anyhow, they are both good and I use them both a lot.
