View Full Version : Media and Ego, just one ass-hole's perspective

After reading the "other" thread that seems to be going on about the mandatory "EGO" that must be obtained prior to officially becoming a "PRO" kayaker, I thought I might say a few things without mentioning the original topic of the other thread.

The nice thing about a media source such as an internet forum is that there it is free and therefore, a lot of people look at it. Does this make it any different from a video or from a magazine? I think it's a little hypocrytical to rip on the people who are advertising their accomplishments online while a copy of Liquid Lifestyles is sitting on your video shelf at home.

Let's face it. Cool shit has been getting media coverage as long as people have been paddling it. Remember when footage of South Silver Creek came out? It was in like EVERY movie for two seasons in a row!! I can't help but think that other runs that are getting high media exposure right now will soon loose some of their media appeal; that is, unless people continue to go on and on and on and on and on about them on internet forums. It's just the trend of the sport, and as much as some people may not like to admit it, it drives the sport to better arenas.

Let's look at a few things. Take the Jefe for example. Liquidlogic created this boat with an enourmous amount of athlete feedback. These are the same athletes who are under criticism right now for being ego-mania-ass-holes. The pro athletes that are out there pushing the sport are also the ones who are somewhat responsible for advances in equipment and new companies. Let's face it, it there was no LVM and no SLP or YGP and all the good athletes were simply doing it because they love it, there would only be Perception and Wave Sport and we'd all be using LC-1 sprayskirts and Navarro drytops. A company like IR does an good job advertising and marketing their stuff to be cool. If publishing photos of certain atheltes on certain runs is what it takes to do that, well.... You figure it out.

I also think it's a little hypocrytical to label athletes as being in it for the CLAIM and the ego if you do not know that athlete personally. Okay, I've said a few bad things about Tao's interviews in various Twitch movies over the years, but I don't go around talking shit about him on the internet. Many of the athletes who are taking this criticism right now from the "O" wannabes are nice guys (from what I gather, I dont' know any of them personally, but I've heard good things about many of them).

Come on, "I'm not saying that those guys aren't good paddlers, but they shouldn't be in it for the exposure...." What a f*#kin lame verse of $hit talk. Of course these guys are sick paddlers. Anyone who says that Pat Keller can't run the shit is an idiot. To say that the only reason they are in it though is for the exposure is a bit over-dramatic I think. Anyone who has pushed themselves to the top of their game knows the feeling that is accomplished by doing so. No one can really explain that feeling, but we all know it. It doesn't matter if it's running waterfalls or learning to cartwheel. When you push yourself and obtain goals in your kayak, you feel it. THAT'S why these guys are out doing these things. Someone just happens to point the camera at them while they're doing it.

I know this seems weird for ME, the ultimate and shameless instigator to be saying this, but come on, let's not become like skiers. Park rats rip on the big mountain guys, big mountain guys rip on the park rats, tele skiers smell funny, and bumpers think they can dominate everyone anywhere. We all like to kayak. Some of us like to talk smack about it too. The bottom line is, let's just be content with that and not take EVERYTHING so serious.

Sorry to get all preachy, but it's just another ass hole's oppinion.

P.S. The Reno Park is going OFF right now!! Everyone should drive from where ever you live to go rip it up here. It's SO sick. I almost swam the other day though, luckily there were some Reno Locals out doing throw bag practice that could have saved me if I had.....

This is not about pro boater ego. This is about creating a bunch attention on one river, UCC. It doesn't need anymore press. Figure it out. The more press this place gets the more likely people will come. The more people that come causes the government to regulate. They should have done a one day on the middle Kings or Devils Postpile. NOW that's a feat. But because of the way UCC is being watch by the government this idea is lame and for that we are one step closer to having a ranger at the put-in regulating who goes and who stays. Who ****ing cares about Pro boaters and the images, boat sales, gayness that they need to have to continue to pump themselves up. This is about a place that needs to cool off for a little while. So here comes LVM to save the day. What do you think the odds of half of these guy's coming back CA anytime soon? How about zero! why? Because they have kayaked the only river worth kayaking in CA and since they don't live here what the **** do they care. **** it, Regulate it! Print it! Video it! brag about it! Shit on it! piss on it and what ever else it doesn't need we should do to it.

Hey ding bat,
1) the secret has been out on UCC for a long time now. Hell, I tell all my boating buddies who live back east about it, I show 'em pictures and videos too. Would you have known about it if it weren't for the images in the media? 2) It is a feat to do it in a day, Post Pile or Middle kings in a day is just not feasible. 3) don't fear the government, they were very cordial to me when I got my permit this year. They only had a few new rules that were very easy to live by, except for those who can't hack carrying the boat the whole way cause they specifically asked us not to drag.

Here is a quote from a friend of mine who works for the government, this was taken from an email to me today..

"I just had a nice chat with Bob Wetzel, USFS Wilderness Coordinator. He was very pleased with the reports he heard from his staff (i.e., minimal kayaker impacts, nice people, educated people that sincerely care about our environment). Unfortunately, they dismantled Flinstone Camp two days ago so the table will not be there when we return next year.

I plan to meet with him at 3:30 on Friday, Aug. 5 to discuss making "regular" Cherry Creek permits easier to get."

That creek is hard enough to predict when it will be in when you live three hours away, so to think that an exodus of people from the east coast, west coast, rocky mountain, europe, or where ever, will drop every thing and show up every year exactly during the few days it is running is asinine.

Randolf you are spot on.....

Yea really! This IS the internet and anyone who wants to can read all the hype authored by the one's actually complaining about the hype? Ironic, don't ya think that all these people are actually creating more attention for this run than the videos, pro boaters, blogs, etc. all put together......... put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Yank this thread?

Let's see.... This tread was started with the intentinon of defending the media and the pro boater. It was Ass-clown GUEST that changed the topic to that OTHER subject. That is the problem. The "Local's only BRA" attitude is creating the problem, not helping to solve it. Notice I didn't chime in to the other tread that is going right now. I think that if we don't talk about it, we won't draw attention to it.

My intention was to draw the attention away from one thing and actually talk about the negative attitude that was being shown towards paddling media and professional kayakers. That's it. If you are upset about where this thread has gone, blame Mr. Unregistered Guest. Of course, you all know how I feel about people talking a bunch of shit without signing their names. Oh wait, since Clay Wright signed his name, you shouldn't because ALL Pro kayakers are peices of shit right?

Well, why don't you write Clay a letter. Hell, you gripe about the LVM "crew." Have you ever been to their website? There is an e-mail address you can contact Daniel at. I'd like to see his response when you e-mail him and say "Hey Daniel, it's clear that you don't give a shit about California, you just want to come out here and use her like a cheap whore, then go back to YOUR side of the world...."

Get a clue idiot.....

When are people gonna take some pride in their smack talk!! Here's Randolph who mixes elements of humor, smack, lies, innuendo, and a touch of truth. Whisks it until it's smooth not lumpy and then pours it with affection into our booties to be discovered the next time we use them. Thats smack talk baby!! And who does this valiant warrior have to battle some anonymous, uncreative, toadstools who can't even come up with interesting usernames. I mean come on.(where we going, can I drive) Here I am laid up for three weeks with this F ing back and this is the best you people can do.

I swear, I'm never getting injured again if this is the only source of boater smack I can find.

SandM-got tired of seeing my name on so many posts. did I mention i'm hurt.
