for all you angelinos who want some flatwater practice for those times you can't make it to a river . . . .
the hansen dam aquatic center in Lake View Terrace (just west of Sunland, about 15 mi. west of Pasadena, 5 mi. north of Burbank) has a nice lake for flatwater practice. it is in the north valley, off the 210 freeway a mile or two east of the intersection with the 118.
DIRECTIONS: take the osborne exit of the 210, go south away from the hills (you are actually on foothill) and drive about a mile, turn left on osborne, and turn left again on dronfield into the park. from there, turn left at the dead end, then turn right at the dead end, then turn left at the first stop sign and take it all the way past the swimming pool to the parking lot in front of the lake.

it is free.

i've been going there once or twice a week for a long time now, but i have never seen another kayaker midweek.
we have a group of five that usually meets those sunday mornings that we don't take it to the kern.
if your handrolling skills are like mine (weak), you know that a friendly bow can come in handy sometimes. plus, it would be cool to meet some other "city" kayakers. we can't all live in bodfish, you know.
so if anyone wants to get together for some flatwater at hansen, gimme a shout -- brettduxbury at mac dot com -- midweek, i usually get there 3 or 330 (no specific day). sundays are usually at 9. if anyone wants to meet at some other specific time, let me know.
oh, the water is quite cold now, but that should be improving.
